Arunachal Pradesh is one of 28 primary states that make up the governmental divisions of modern-day India.

Located in India’s northeast corner, Arunachal Pradesh is a landlocked area nestled within the immense Himalayan mountain range. Founded as a modern state on February 20th, 1987, it is the largest division in that region of the country, with an area of over 83,000 square kilometers.

The official symbol of Arunachal Pradesh contains many visual homages to the state's unique nature. Arunachal Pradesh means "land of the dawn-lit mountains" in Sanskrit, and that poetic epithet is clearly illustrated here. Because the mountains support a variety of ecosystems, rare and exotic wildlife is abundant in the state. The Great Indian Hornbill is the state bird of Arunachal Pradesh and in the state symbol they are featured as heralds. The miniature design at the apex is a version of India's national symbol; a column capital with four lions that dates back to the rule of the Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE.
